History

A tradition of excellence
Dominique Savio Nursery’s tradition of excellence traces its beginnings to the mid 20th century.
Our name sake, Dominique Savio, was born in the 19th century and is the patron saint of the Brothers of the order of Saint Vincent de Paul. The order possessed a nursery in St-Jean Baptiste de Rouville in the Montérégie area of Québec, south of the St. Lawrence River. Also at this location, the brothers operated a dairy farm, an orchard and gardens for vegetable production and canning.
During the 1960’s, the brothers had the opportunity to acquire adjacent pieces of land in Marieville. Over time their business underwent a transformation, moving away from dairy, vegetable and orchard operations to an increased focus on the nursery. From that point forward, the nursery experienced significant growth with the production of tens of thousands of apple trees each year.
Beginning in the 1980’s with the addition of ornamental varieties to the product line, Dominique Savio Nursery underwent considerable expansion. At the same time the nursery acquired expertise in tree propagation through grafting.
Today, the Nursery administration operates out of our offices located at our production site in Marieville. We grow trees destined for garden centers, municipalities small to large, landscape professionals and orchards and are considered one the most important tree nurseries in the province.
